The Impact of War In Britain :: essays research papers
The Impact of War at Home When war was declared, there were no celebrations. Instead the government took immediate action, and emergency powers, everyone was issued with gas masks in 1938. The bombing power of the Germans was something that was feared greatly by those that remembered the first war, and by the government, who knew that German bombers were now very advanced. Between the 1st and 3rd of September over one million people were evacuated, as the government were particularly worried about immediate bombing of built up and industrial areas. The majority of evacuees were children from poorer homes in larger cities. Their lives changed dramatically, they had to move to a whole new world in the country. However, as from September 1939 ââ¬â May 1940 was the Phoney War, meaning no bombs were dropped, almost half the evacuees had been returned by the beginning of The Blitz, many of which had to be evacuated again. Mothers could accompany children under 5, but any child older then that was housed by foster parents, who received an allowance from the government. Children who were evacuated had good and bad experiences, depending on what their foster homes were like. Preparations had been made for the expected bombing, bombers were more accurate now then in the first war and the government prepared people by building bomb shelters and setting up volunteer organisations to deal with the air raid threat. There were 1.5 million Anderson shelters given away by September 1939, which were put in gardens and covered up. There were also over one million Morrison Shelters issued in 1941, a Morrison Shelter was a steel mesh box to contain a mattress, and could be kept in the living room. Air raid wardens and Auxiliary fire services were trained in Air Raid Precautions, the blackout was imposed, as were Anti Aircraft guns and Barrage Balloons to force bombers higher, sirens were put up to warn of attack and the WVS was set up to help women with injuries and comfort. Britain managed to survive The Blitz. Government films and statements only showed the bravery and fighting spirit of the civilians and reports were censored if they gave numbers or photographs of the dead. The major target areas for the Germans during The Blitz were London, Birmingham, Bristol, Merseyside, Southampton, Sheffield, Cardiff, Hull, Plymouth, Belfast, Clydeside and Coventry. In the summer of 1941 German bombers were needed for the invasion of the USSR and The Blitz came to an end, though air raids continued and by Summer 1941 more civilians had been killed in the War then British soldiers.

It was a dark night on a small island off the coast of Maine; I heard a shot, and a gunshot that echoed in my ears it felt like I was wounded. On the night of the gunshot a fisherman disappeared. The body was absent from the day of the gunshot, a young man known as Ryan Adams was accused of the murder. Years later the fisherman was found, found for just a few seconds he was found by a young girl who was playing in the sea when she suddenly felt a hand. I was at the scene firstly it seemed like the girls was drowning, I went for her rescue thinking that she is drowning, but then a yellow raincoat flicked into my eyes. I screamed out ââ¬Å"its him, its him it's the fisherman that went missing at the gunshot sceneâ⬠. I was in shock I couldn't believe it, then I suddenly saw the fisherman moving he was getting, getting out of the sea. I screamed ââ¬Å"he's alive he's aliveâ⬠I saw for one moment and the he vanished, disappeared he was gone. I couldn't even say stop, wait, don't goâ⬠¦he was gone. The following day everybody in the island was talking about the return of the fisherman, but just for a few seconds. On the same day the young man Ryan Adams that was accused of murdering the fisherman was set free. A further investigation was in process the investigation was named as ââ¬Ëwho fired the gunshot?' Since the day the fisherman reappeared he was never seen again. One night I went out to the seaside to catch some fish for dinner, the sky was pitch black I couldn't see anything. When I was fishing I heard something, something that was thrown into the sea from a distance. I turned around and looked at the shaw it looked like I saw the fisherman it looked he had that same yellow raincoat I was sure it was him because it looked like he was getting closer to me. I packed up my equipment and headed towards my home. I had another look back and I saw the fisherman in distance, he was running, running towards me. When I looked carefully at him it looked like he was carrying something in his hand, it was hard to describe from such distance but as he got closer I started picturing it, it looked like a gun. I was shattered, scared in amazement. He was getting closer and closer and closer and closer, then I heard a gun shot it was echoing in my ears it sounded like the bullet was getting closerâ⬠¦then suddenly I flew out my bed and started screaming ââ¬Å"agghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhâ⬠¦its was a dream, a dream, a dream that know one would ever believe.

Death Penalty When turning on the television, radio, or simply opening the local newspaper, people are bombarded with news of arrests, murders, homicides, and other such tragedies. I believe murder, including the death penalty, is the worst thing that anyone could do. Since Hammurabi first introduced the notion of ââ¬Å"An eye for an eye, a tooth for a toothâ⬠, people have been arguing over whether this is just punishment. Those in favor of the death penalty argue that people should pay for the crimes they do. For them, death is the only fit punishment in some cases. This is not the case. The death penalty is, rather, unethical and wrong. A death for another death does nothing but satisfy ones need for revenge. I believe that religious beliefs, such as the Ten Commandments, are the corner stone for our law system. Executing someone should not be made an exception to Godââ¬â ¢s rule. Most people feel that men who rape little children deserve to die a painful death. They feel that the child and family would be much happier if he dies and know that he canââ¬â¢t hurt anyone anymore. The death penalty still would be wrong. I am pretty sure that people would feel differently if it were their family. They would just want them to get a harsher punishment. My next reason against the death penalty is that taxpayers waste too much of their money with the death penalty. The average death penalty case is appealed many times. This means that the taxpayers must pay for the same trial to be heard three times. This is a very expensive practice. Also, the convicted murderer spends a long time on death row. If supporters of the death penalty are positive enough to kill the person for committing the crime, shouldnââ¬â¢t the supporters be confident enough to execute them in a timely manner? 2.6 Self-esteem: A positive self-view is a universal motivation (Sedikides, Gaertner and Toguchi, 2003), though studies report varying cross-cultural differences in self-esteem (e.g., Heine, Lehman, Markus and Kitayama, 1999). North American populations, influenced by cultural norms of independence, display strong needs (and desires) to view the self in a positive light and typically score above the theoretical mid-point on self-esteem scales (Baumeister, Tice and Hutton, 1989). Rabbit Proof Fence Essay In Australia, from 1883 (when the Aborigines Protection Board was established) and, unbelievably, right up to 1969 (when the Aborigines Welfare Board was abolished) an estimated 1 in 10 of all Aboriginal children were forcibly removed from their families in an effort to civilize them by assimilation into European society and culture. As most Australians now know, successive Government authorities assumed legal guardianship of all Indigenous children and removed approximately 100,000 part-Aboriginal children from their parents and placed them with white Australian families, or in institutional care. Often they were abused, or used as domestic servants, or simply placed in homes against their will. The Stolen Generation destroyed numerous Aboriginesââ¬â¢ lives. The damage done to them has not been redeemed, after many years. The film, Rabbit Proof Fence communicates and connects deeply with the viewersââ¬â¢ knowledge, response and feelings deeply towards the injustice of the Stolen Generation. Rabbit Proof Fence, sympathises the viewer with the Aborigines, sharing the atmosphere of hopeless, powerlessness and loss, bringing out its significance in its message. The power of sympathy, kinship, bonds and injustice were used throughout the film to bias the viewers. Rabbit Proof Fence focuses on many of these techniques repeatedly to highlight this, including suitable background music, camera angles, symbolic, realism and audio codes. The most dramatic scene which biases most viewers was the scene when Constable Riggs seized 3 innocent half-caste girls off their unwilling relatives under the permission of a legal document. Already, this sort of action carried out in this part screams out ââ¬Ëinjusticeââ¬â¢ to the audiencesââ¬â¢ response. However, there were many more techniques in this scene which captures the audienceââ¬â¢s sympathy and encourage hope for the half-caste girls to escape and arrive back into the arms of true freedom and happiness, and the security of their family. The film is set in Australia in the 1930s, and begins in a remote town of Jingalong where 3 children, sisters Molly Craig and Daisy Kadibil, lived contented and satisfactorily with their mother, grandmother and cousin Gracie Fields. The town lies along the northern part of Australiaââ¬â¢s rabbit proof fence, which runs on for thousands of miles. After A. O. Neville, the chief protector of Aborigines who ââ¬Å"had permission to remove any half-caste children in WAâ⬠, signs an order to re-locate the 3 half-caste girls to the re-education camp, the children are forcibly taken from their families. This scene had used many techniques to capture the attention and sympathy from the audiences. A surprisingly quiet and peaceful long shot over the ââ¬ËJingalong Depotââ¬â¢ where Molly and her relatives were calm, socializing and buying things turned into an intense, nail-biting, frantic and shaky camera scene which provided a sense of realism when the powerless and frail family tried to escape the powerful hands of Constable Riggs. The soundtrack of the shouting and screaming of the Mollyââ¬â¢s family and the sound of Constable Riggsââ¬â¢ car became dominant to show that it was a ââ¬Ëbattleââ¬â¢ between injustice and freedom. A close up was shown inside Constable Riggsââ¬â¢ car, and a panning as Mollyââ¬â¢s family ran, showing the car gaining them, which is a sign of the familyââ¬â¢s vulnerability and no hope of escaping. An extreme close-up was focused on Constable Riggsââ¬â¢ face to show determination, grim, and even anxious, maybe even to get this over with. As Constable Riggsââ¬â¢ car finally caught up with Mollyââ¬â¢s family, Maude, Mollyââ¬â¢s mother, held protectively over her children, a high angle camera shot was established to show the weak, vulnerability and a lack of protection Maude had over the children. A low angle shot was also established on Constable Riggs, which determines he has more power, authority and definitely more stamina than Maude and the family. A medium shot was shown as Constable Riggs holds the legal document above him, an act of authority, and waving the piece of paper at Maude, claiming that it was the law and that he had the rights and permission to remove the children. Nevilleââ¬â¢s theory, Aborigines endanger themselves and their half-caste children so their children must be removed from their family and full-blooded Aborigines must be bred out of existence to avoid an ââ¬Ëunwantedââ¬â¢ 3rd race. Rabbit Proof Fence expresses many of the values and attitudes regarding respect and dignity towards the Indigenous, and had a strong and clear message about commonality. Everyone is the same when it comes to love and in the dependence of parents and children. Although A. O. Neville only wanted to ââ¬Ëhelpââ¬â¢ advance a half-caste status to a whiteââ¬â¢s status, he did not know how badly those few minutes impacted on the Aboriginal parentââ¬â¢s lives. Aborigines are no worse than white parents as long as their children are healthy and happy and even when the children are taken from their parents to the Moore River Camp and trained to be servants for the whites, they cannot experience the full benefits until they are fully white. The whites were selfish and wanted to take advantages from Aborigines as their slaves. For a century, resisted and suffered the invasion of their lands by white settlers.

Prison inmates, are some of the most ?maladjusted? people in society. Most of the inmates have had too little discipline or too much, come from broken homes, and have no self-esteem. They are very insecure and are ?at war with themselves as well as with society? (Szumski 20). Most inmates did not learn moral values or learn to follow everyday norms. Also, when most lawbreakers are labeled criminals they enter the phase of secondary deviance. They will admit they are criminals or believe it when they enter the phase of secondary deviance (Doob 171). Next, some believe that if we want to rehabilitate criminals we must do more than just send them to prison. For instance, we could give them a chance to acquire job skills; which will improve the chances that inmates will become productive citizens upon release. The programs must aim to change those who want to change. Those who are taught to produce useful goods and to be productive are ?likely to develop the self-esteem essential to a no rmal, integrated personality? (Szumski 21). This kind of program would provide skills and habits and ?replace the sense of hopelessness? that many inmates have (Szumski 21). Moreover, another technique used to rehabilitate criminals is counseling. There is two types of counseling in general, individual and group counseling. Individual counseling is much more costly than group counseling. The aim of group counseling is to develop positive peer pressure that will influence its members. One idea in many sociology text is that group problem-solving has definite advantages over individual problem-solving. The idea is that a wider variety of solutions can be derived by drawing from the experience of several people with different backgrounds. Also one individuals problem might have already been solved by another group member and can be suggested. Often if a peer proposes a solution it carries more weight than if the counselor were to suggest it (Bennett 20-24). Further, in sociology, one o f the major theories of delinquency is differential association (Cressey 1955). This means some people learned their ways from ?undesirable? people who they were forced to be in association with and that this association ?warps? their thinking and social attitudes. ?Group counseling, group interaction, and other kinds of group activities can provide a corrective, positive experience that might help to offset the earlier delinquent association? (Bennett 25). However, it is said that group counseling can do little to destroy the power of labeling (Bennett 26). The differential-association theory emphasizes that a person is more likely to become a criminal if the people who have the greatest influence upon them are criminals (Doob 169).
